Building on the innovative legacy of Kristjan Järvi’s previous artistic projects and the unique soundscapes he has developed, leading to numerous collaborations such as Ships with Brian Eno, recordings with Max Richter, Tom Tykwers Babylon Berlin and many filmscores, NPO is the culmination of the best of all those works including players from his groups, such as the Absolute Ensemble, Meelte Videvik Band, Baltic Sea Youth Philharmonic and Baltic Sea Philharmonic. NPO blends classical traditions with technological possibilities and modern influences to bring a fresh and exciting perspective to the music scene.

The ensemble’s unique structure on and off stage allows for autonomy in producing, live producing, performing, and recording original compositions. This independence enhances the creative process and results in dynamic and engaging musical experiences. The Järvi Academy Youth Symphony Orchestra consists of the participants of the Järvi Academy string, wind and percussion masterclasses. In addition to orchestral playing, the young musicians will also receive tuition during the week from the top musicians in their field: soloists of the Pärnu Music Festival and Järvi Academy, players from the Estonian Festival Orchestra and professors of European, but also American higher education institutions.

 

The Järvi Academy Youth Symphony Orchestra is conducted by the participants of the Järvi Academy conducting course participants. The conducting masterclasses are led by Paavo Järvi, Neeme Järvi, Kristjan Järvi and Leonid Grin.

The orchestra is dedicated to highlighting Estonian music, premiering and recording new works every year. Long-term collaborations with various concert organisations and internationally renowned musicians have established it as a prominent member of the Estonian music scene.

Starting from the 2024/25 season, the chief conductor of the Pärnu City Orchestra will be Henri Christofer Aavik, a representative of the younger generation of Estonian conductors and recipient of the 2022 Cultural Endowment of Estonia’s Annual Award in the field of musical arts. He has gained attention as a laureate of the 5th Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition and the 8th Jorma Panula International Conducting Competition, and has conducted numerous prestigious ensembles, including the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century (Amsterdam), Sinfonia Rotterdam, Staatskapelle Weimar, Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, and Orchestra Senzaspine (Bologna).

The long dreamed of ambition by Järvi to create a hand picked orchestra, bringing together the best of Estonian talent and leading musicians from from around the world, has now become a reality, establishing itself in the top-league, “imbued with the spirit of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra” (Der Standard, Austria). 

The Estonian Festival Orchestra was founded by Paavo Järvi in 2011 as the resident orchestra of the Pärnu Music Festival. The long dreamed of ambition by Järvi to create a handpicked orchestra, bringing together the best of Estonian talent and leading musicians from around the world, has led to international acclaim: ‘one of the world’s great orchestras’ (The Arts Desk, UK), ‘with a truly breathtaking energy and virtuosity’ (Diapason, France), ‘imbued with the spirit of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra’ (Der Standard, Austria), where ‘there are no egos, but truly passionate people in making and listening to the best music’ (El País, Spain) and where ‘year after year you can see and hear the artists evolve, open up, listen to each other’ (Die Welt, Germany).

‘An important component in creating the orchestra was to “match-make” the players,’ says Paavo Järvi. ‘If you are a young player in Estonia, it doesn’t matter how good you are, it’s not often easy to make contact with a top player in the west. Now we can give these young musicians the advantage to play with elite players from abroad and get to know them as new friends. This spirit is what drives the orchestra and it is a delight each summer to see how those relationships have grown naturally, creating a melting pot of national and international talent where nationality is happily and importantly no boundary.’

In January 2018, the Estonian Festival Orchestra made its first European tour with concerts in Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, Luxembourg, Vienna and Zurich. In the same year it debuted at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and London Royal Albert Hall, making history as the first Estonian ensemble to perform at the BBC Proms. Since then it has toured regularly throughout Europe, Japan and Korea.

The Estonian Festival Orchestra has released five albums on Alpha Classics: Shostakovich Symphony No. 6 and Sinfonietta (2018), Mythos, dedicated to the music of Erkki-Sven Tüür in celebration of his 60th birthday (2019), Estonian Premieres (2022) highlighting the music of Tõnu Kõrvits, Ülo Krigul, Helena Tulve, Tauno Aints and Lepo Sumera, Kratt (2023) featuring works by Eduard Tubin, Witold Lutosławski and Grażyna Bacewicz, and Ship of Fools premiering new orchestral works by Jüri Reinvere (2024).
