Dr. Zach Buie is a versatile performer based in Boise, Idaho where he is an Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Music History at Boise State University. Dr. Buie has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America in venues such as the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Cadogan Hall in London, Seoul Arts Center, Auditorio de Zaragoza in Spain, the National Theatre of El Salvador, and the Macao Cultural Center among others.
He has performed with the Seoul Philharmonic, Macao Orchestra, Utah Symphony, Dallas Winds, Waco Symphony, Boise Philharmonic, Opera Idaho, Round Rock Symphony, Yakima Symphony, Brazos Valley Symphony, Utah Festival Opera, Utah Metropolitan Ballet, Imperial Brass, Boise Baroque Orchestra, and the Helena Symphony. Dr. Buie is a charter member of the Palisade Trumpet Collective, a professional trumpet ensemble founded in 2021.
From 2010 to 2014, Dr. Buie performed and toured with Soul Track Mind, a 7 piece original soul/funk outfit based in Austin, Texas. He was featured on three of their albums while being recognized by The New York Times as leaders in the resurgence of soul music. Additional commercial/jazz experience includes performances with Hugh Jackman, Ben Folds, MGMT, The Walkmen, Gene Harris Super Band, Osmond Chapman Orchestra, Terry Cavanagh & the Alpine Express, The Phoenix Jazz & Swing Band, Flyjack, Beautiful Supermachines, and the Jack Melick Big Band. He also enjoyed a four year run as a member of the Noise Revival Orchestra in Austin. The orchestral indie collective averaged 13 members and was featured on the MTVU Network in 2008. This dynamic performing ensemble fused classical, rock, and pop influences.
Before taking his post at Boise State University, Dr. Buie served on the faculties of Baylor University, the University of Utah, and Western Wyoming Community College. Following several years freelancing in Austin, Texas and Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Buie began his professional teaching career as Director of Bands at Marfa High School in Marfa, Texas, a position he still cherishes. Dr. Buie’s teaching studio has experienced success from local to international levels. His students have been accepted into the National Trumpet Competition, numerous all-state ensembles, the Korean Summer Youth Orchestra, the Northwest Honor Band, and into prestigious undergraduate and graduate schools. Dr. Buie’s students have gone on to teach at outstanding high school and college programs and to play professionally in orchestras, chamber ensembles, and military bands.
He serves as a regular guest artist presenting masterclasses at universities and conservatories across the United States and abroad. As an advocate for youth music programs that serve underrepresented students, he established a guest artist teaching residency for Boise State University students with the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony. He has also worked with the El Sistema program in El Salvador as a Teaching Fellow with the MusAid organization. He served on the Board of Directors of the Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City founding their educational outreach program.
Dr. Buie has performed or presented clinics at the conferences of the International Trumpet Guild, National Association for Music Education, Idaho Bandmasters Association, Idaho Music Educators Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Utah Music Educators Association, Oregon Music Educators Association, California Music Educators Association, Washington Music Educators Association, Alaska Music Educators Association, Association for Music in International Schools, Korea International Music Educators Association, and College Band Directors National Association.
He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Music from Baylor University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Utah. Dr. Zach Buie is a Conn-Selmer performing artist and plays Bach Stradivarius trumpets.
