Pärnu Music Festival Sets New Attendance Record

Nearly 13,000 concertgoers attended the XIV Pärnu Music Festival over ten days, and during the festival, the Pärnu Music Festival TV web broadcasts were watched by 19,081 unique viewers from 72 countries.

“At the festival’s final concert alone, there were nearly 900 people in the hall and 3,000 viewers online, making the Pärnu Music Festival one of the most popular classical music events in Estonia,” commented Kristjan Hallik, the chief organiser of the Pärnu Music Festival.

According to Hallik, the festival’s 13,000 sold-out tickets significantly increased the number of holidaymakers in Pärnu. “The Pärnu Concert Hall, the venue for the festival, cannot accommodate more people, but this year, the substantial growth in audience numbers was brought about by the nightly live broadcasts on Pärnu Music Festival TV, whose viewership was significantly more international than last year. This means that with the festival in Estonia’s summer capital, we have taken a major step into the international music world.”

In 2024, the Pärnu Music Festival, with its ten-day programme, presented 400 musicians and five orchestras, conductors Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, and Kristjan Järvi, international top soloists Ksenija Sidorova, Hans Christian Aavik, Alisa Weilerstein, Kirill Gerstein, Indrek Leivategija, Tuuri Dede, Maarika Järvi, and Tähe-Lee Liiv, a top-class classical music concert programme, and three world premieres of new works by Estonian composers.

Parallel to the festival, the annual Järvi Academy conducting course and masterclasses for young string, wind, and percussion instrumentalists were held in Pärnu. These well-established and high-level programmes significantly contribute to the education of young musicians, inspiring them to continue their studies and explore future opportunities in their musical careers.

The next Pärnu Music Festival will take place from 16th to 25th July 2025.

Erkki-Sven Tüür Awarded the 2024 Lepo Sumera Composition Award

Yesterday, 19th July, at the second final concert of the Pärnu Music Festival, composer Erkki-Sven Tüür was presented with the Lepo Sumera Composition Award, initiated by the Estonian Authors’ Society and the Estonian Composers’ Union.

“The sense of the world’s wholeness often tends to be lost in contemporary times, and Erkki-Sven Tüür’s music powerfully counterbalances this tendency towards fragmentation. His deep engagement with fundamental existential themes imbues his work with a potent transformative energy and a sense of cosmic vastness,” commented jury chair Helena Tulve on the jury’s decision.

Erkki-Sven Tüür is one of Estonia’s most prominent symphonists. Beginning his career in the late Soviet era, he synthesised the trends of the time—progressive rock music, neomodality, post-serialist complexity, and the aesthetic of electronic music. By the turn of the millennium, he had developed an original compositional technique and style, where sound and its unfolding in time manifest in classical instrumental large forms, such as symphonies and instrumental concertos. By stripping modern sound of its often superficial and fragmented nature and using it to create coherent structures in the classical sense, Tüür largely continues the tradition central to Estonian music in the last decades of the 20th century, represented by Lepo Sumera.

The Lepo Sumera Composition Award values a clear developmental trajectory in the recipient’s personal style, the breadth of musical thought, and the artistic depth within a composer’s body of work.

This year’s recipient was selected by a jury comprising composer Helena Tulve, musicologist Kerri Kotta, and pianist Kadri-Ann Sumera.

Previous laureates of the Lepo Sumera Composition Prize include Tõnu Kõrvits, Helena Tulve, Toivo Tulev, Jüri Reinvere, Galina Grigorjeva, Ülo Krigul, Tatjana Kozlova-Johannes, and Age Veeroos. The prize has been awarded since 2016.

The award includes a monetary prize of 4500 euros, sponsored by the Estonian Authors’ Society and the Estonian Composers’ Union.

Pärnu Music Festival Järvi Academy shows the fruits of its work

The opportunity to study under the guidance of world-famous conductors Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi and Kristjan Järvi, as well as Paavo Järvi’s teacher Leonid Grin, tempts young musicians from all over the world to participate in the conducting course of the Järvi Academy of the Pärnu Music Festival. Similarly, master classes for young players of strings, wind instruments and percussion are currently taking place in Pärnu, supervised by top international lecturers, the best of the best of whom will be able to take to the stage at the concerts of the Järvi Academy that have already taken place and are about to take place.

The Järvi family has always considered the music education of Estonian young people to be a very important and close topic to their hearts. This is why, years ago, the foundation was laid for the comprehensive master classes of Järvi Academy, which are taking place in parallel with the Pärnu Music Festival, where 136 young people from 30 countries are participating this year. Of the participants, 60 per cent are international and 40 per cent are from Estonia.

Traditionally, the greatest interest in international interest has always been in the conducting course of the Järvi Academy. “As Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi and Kristjan Järvi regularly give concerts around the world, international conducting schools have found our festival master course and there are always many people interested in getting to it. The competition for the conducting course is also tight, and this year 22 young people from Georgia, Poland, France, Romania, Norway, South Korea, China, USA, Great Britain, Canada, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, New Zealand and also from Estonia always have a place in the conducting course,” said Kristjan Hallik, the head organiser of the Pärnu Music Festival.

“Similarly, 19 world-class lecturers of strings, percussion and wind instruments are currently giving master classes at the Järvi Academy in Pärnu, among them lecturers from the leading music academies in the world, such as the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin, Robert Schumann University of Music, Düsseldorf, Lübeck University of Music, Hanover Higher School of Music, Theatre and Media, Norway Academy of Music, Lausanne HEMU and Graz University of the Arts,” the head organiser added.

According to Hallik, although the courses are mainly designed for university students and the graduates of specialised secondary education music institutions, today the level of young instrument players can be high, so they pass the competition necessary to get into the master course in their specialty. So, this year, the youngest participant of the Järvi Academy is 12 years old, and the oldest is 33 years old. All of them will receive three inividual specialty classes, lectures on music physiology, and the best of the best will be able to perform on stage to the concerts of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Järvi Academy.

“This year, the master classes of strings, wind instruments and percussion at the Järvi Academy have an unusually high percentage of international music students. An important motivation for applying to Pärnu was given to many by Neeme Järvi’s decision to conduct the Järvi Academy Youth Symphony Orchestra at the opening concert (on July 10), which was put together only from the participants of the master classes. The young people were also interested in the opportunity to study under the guidance of the lecturers of the festival’s renowned master classes and to gain experience in orchestral work under the guidance of Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Kristjan Järvi and Leonid Grin and the young conductors of the conducting course of the Järvi Academy – together they are currently preparing for the final concert of the Järvi Academy on 17 July,” said Kristjan Hallik.

In addition, the master classes of instrument studies at Järvi Academy will start the new week with two concerts in the Pärnu city space – in the forenoon of July 15, a free concert of the students of Järvi Academy for strings, wind instruments and percussion will take place in Pärnu Town Hall, and in the evening of the same day, a concert of the teachers of Järvi Academy will take place in the Elisabeth Church of Pärnu.

Jüri Reinvere’s Album “Ship of Fools” Presented in Pärnu

13. July Jüri Reinvere’s Album „Ship of Fools“ (Alpha Classics, 2024) was presented at the Pärnu Music Festival. Paavo Järvi’s latest album with the Estonian Festival Orchestra features three of his recent works, all of which were premiered in Pärnu in the recent years.

The collaboration began in 2016 with Reinvere’s delicately playful Concerto for 2 flutes, strings and percussion featuring soloists Maarika Järvi and Monika Mattiesen, followed in 2018 with the energetic orchestral triptych And Tired from Happiness, They Started to Dance and in 2023 by the haunting Scherzo On the Ship of Fools.

The album takes its title from the moral satire “Ship of Fools” by Sebastian Brant. Though first published in 1494 the book’s central sentence remains both timeless and relevant: Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur – The world wants to be deceived, so let us deceive them. Whilst the composition On the Ship of Fools is labelled a “scherzo”, it is not a musical joke, but rather an eerie vision and typical of Jüri Reinvere, whose sources of inspiration are as diverse as his compositions. “People deceive each other on Facebook and Instagram,” he said, adding that politicians are primarily attempting to be likeable instead of solving urgent problems. In the interests of new ideologies, history is being rewritten everywhere to the point where we hardly know who we actually are.

Born in Tallinn in 1971 Reinvere grew up in Soviet-occupied Estonia, receiving early lessons from Lepo Sumera before moving first to Poland and then on to Finland to continue his studies. Through the Estonian-Swedish pianist and writer Käbi Laretei, his most important mentor, he met her then husband Ingmar Bergman. The Swedish film director encouraged him to study clinical psychiatry and worked with him on developing strong narrative frameworks. Laretei and Bergman then persuaded him to write poems and essays. In the meantime, he has received important awards in Estonia for his essays in the weekly magazine “Sirp” and daily newspaper “Postimees” and also writes for the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” in Germany, where he has lived since 2005.

“Ship of Fools” is Paavo Järvi and the Estonian Festival Orchestra’s fifth recording for Alpha Classics. Previous releases include Shostakovich Symphony No. 6 and Sinfonietta (2018), “Mythos”, dedicated to the music of Erkki-Sven Tüür in celebration of his 60th birthday (2019), “Estonian Premieres” (2022) featuring the music of Tõnu Kõrvits, Ülo Krigul, Helena Tulve, Tauno Aints and Lepo Sumera; and “Kratt” (2023) which explores the relationship between Estonia and Poland under Soviet occupation, through the music of Tubin, Lutoslawsi and Bacewicz.

Pärnu Music Festival Highlights 2024

The 14th Pärnu Music Festival kicks off on July 10, bringing Estonia to the forefront of the classical music world with an outstanding international concert programme. This year, the festival boasts a record number of participants, featuring 400 musicians from both home and abroad.

Opening the festival, maestro Neeme Järvi will conduct the Järvi Academy Youth Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by cello soloist Indrek Leivategija. On July 12, Kristjan Järvi will take the stage with the Nordic Pulse Orchestra, delivering a unique and visionary concert.

Artistic director Paavo Järvi will conduct four concerts, collaborating with the Estonian Festival Orchestra and top soloists. A highlight includes the world premiere of Tõnu Kõrvits’s accordion concerto performed by the sensational Ksenija Sidorova on July 13. Rising Estonian violinist Hans Christian Aavik, winner of the 2022 Carl Nielsen Competition, will make his solo debut on July 14, performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

On July 15, Hans Christian Aavik will lead a concert associated with the Estonian Musical Instruments Foundation, which supports young talent by loaning them valuable instruments. His brother, Henri Christofer Aavik, will conduct a late-night concert featuring flute soloist Maarika Järvi and the Pärnu City Orchestra.

The festival’s artistic highlights include chamber music concerts, a performance by Järvi Academy professors on July 15, and the Estonian Festival Orchestra’s gala concert on July 16.

The festival also hosts the Järvi Academy, which welcomes 16 aspiring conductors and over 100 young string, wind, and percussion musicians from around the globe for masterclasses.

Concluding the festival, two exceptional soloists will grace the stage. American cellist Alisa Weilerstein will perform Elgar’s elegant Cello Concerto on July 18, followed by Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein’s passionate rendition of Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” on July 19.

Running from July 10 to 19, the festival features 16 concerts over ten days, supported by five orchestras. All concerts held at the Pärnu Concert Hall will be broadcast live by Pärnu Music Festival TV and Klassikaraadio.

Last year, the festival was named one of the top 29 classical music festivals in Europe, attracting 10,000 visitors and reaching over 9,500 unique online viewers.
